At one time, landfills located on Forest Preserve District property accepted residential and commercial refuse and served the solid-waste disposal needs of DuPage County. Revenues that the District has collected from operating the landfills are now part of an ongoing, non-tax-supported revenue stream that benefits a variety of District developments and operations.

The Office of Environmental Services oversees the conversion of landfills into recreational areas, landscaping each to provide interesting visual experiences and special-use for forest preserve visitors. It also manages the cleanup of contaminated parcels that the District has acquired over the years. Once the parcels are remediated and restored, the District can return them to the residents of DuPage County for their use. Revenues that the District has collected from operating the landfills — and not tax dollars — fund these cleanup and remediation projects.
