Fischer Woods
Fischer Woods currently stands as an undeveloped, natural area, and contains one of the few wet forest pockets in the county. As a result, the preserve hosts mature basswood and red oak trees, which differ from species found in most other preserves. The area aids in storm-water control by acting as a natural drainage basin during heavy rains, and is home to ephemeral ponds with a variety of amphibians, a cattail marsh, and open prairie.
Education
The Bensenville Park District offers programs and events at the Fischer Farm homestead, one of the oldest remaining in the county. Many of the programs highlight the historic setting and pristine landscape. Parking is available in front of the farm house. For more information, see www.bensenvilleparkdistrict.org or call (630) 766-7015.
Volunteer Opportunities
Working under the direction of the Office of Natural Resources, volunteer site stewards and “Volunteer Restoration Workday” participants help to monitor and manage the marshes, prairies and woodlands that make up this preserve. For information on volunteer opportunities at Fischer Woods and other forest preserves, visit the Natural Resource Management volunteer page, or contact Volunteer Services at (630) 933-7681 or volunteer@dupageforest.org.
