Picnickers can reserve York Woods’ 100-person shelter through Visitor Services at (630) 933-7248 but must do so at least three business days before their visit. This historic shelter, which includes a grill, was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps after the Great Depression.
In addition, picnickers can use the 25-person nonreservable shelter to the north.
Ground fires are prohibited, but visitors may bring their own grills and use the on-site hot-coal disposal containers.
For everyone’s convenience, York Woods offers a water pump and restrooms with pit toilets.
An asphalt footpath that takes hikers through the woods and along the northern edge of the preserve connects the south picnic area with the north picnic area.
A second, 1-mile paved trail also connects the two areas and is open to hikers and cross-country skiers as well as to bicyclists or joggers.
Dogs are welcome at York Woods but must be on leashes no greater than 10 feet in length.
