The coyote is the largest wild dog in the DuPage forest preserves. It has a gray or tan grizzled coat, a buff underbody, a long, pointed nose and a bushy tail with a black tip.

  • 2 feet tall at its shoulder
  • Weighs 20 to 50 pounds
  • Lives in prairies and open areas
  • Eats small rodents, birds, snakes, fish, insects, nuts and berries
  • Howls, barks, yelps and yaps

Did You Know?

The coyote can run in short bursts up to 40 miles per hour, making it the best runner of all the wild dogs.
