Where does the word "coyote" come from?
The word coyote comes from the ancient Aztec word "coyotl," which means "barking dog."
What do coyotes look like?
Coyotes are around two feet high at their shoulders and weigh between 20 and 50 pounds. They're about the size of medium-size dogs – in fact, they kind of look like dogs, but coyotes have furrier tails and longer, skinnier faces.
What do coyotes eat?
Coyotes are omnivores, which means they eat a lot of different things! They eat deer, rabbits, birds, snakes, fish, insects and other animals. They also eat some plants like fruits and grasses.
How long do coyotes live?
Coyotes live an average of 14-16 years.

Coyotes can live almost anywhere, but they prefer to live in open, grassy areas like forest preserves.
What are coyote babies called?
Coyote babies are called "pups." Coyotes usually have around six pups, but they have been known to have as many as 19!

Coyotes make a few different sounds. Howling is something that coyotes do in a group. Usually one coyote begins and the others join in. A coyote's howl can be heard for miles! Coyotes also make barking sounds called "yaps."
