For Immediate Release
Feb. 27, 2009
A light and fluffy angel-food, a rich chocolate, or a fruity jelly-roll cake might have been the choice for an 1890s woman making dessert for a special occasion, such as a birthday, anniversary or church social. Whichever her choice, she would have made the cake from scratch by hand. Visit Kline Creek Farm in Winfield for two upcoming programs on the history and how-tos of cake baking.
For an in-depth experience, join "Cakes From Scratch Class" on March 21. Two sessions are available,
9 a.m. – noon and 1 – 4 p.m. Participants will use old-fashioned techniques and tools in the farmhouse kitchen. Each person will take home recipes and the cake they create in class. "Cakes From Scratch Class" costs $25 per person. Advance reservations are required by calling 630-876-5900.
During "Cakes for Special Occasions" on March 22, visitors will see cakes being made and enjoy the wonderful aromas from the wood-burning oven. They’ll find out the proper techniques for creaming butter and beating cake batter. Cookbooks and magazines of the era will be on display, and recipes for use in modern kitchens will be available. "Cakes for Special Occasions" is free, and reservations are not required. Demonstrations take place at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
