For Immediate Release
Jan. 23, 2009
In Victorian times, people believed that a beautiful home would foster a beautiful soul. The responsibility to establish and keep that home was considered part of being a wife. Visit Kline Creek Farm in Winfield to see decorative objects and to gain insight into motifs of the era.
Join "Fancywork in the Home" tours of the farmhouse every hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. offered Feb. 5 – 23. See how natural items such as seashells, stuffed birds and dried flowers were displayed.
Women also created decorations by hand, and considerable skill was required for the many techniques. During "Fancywork Day" on Feb. 14 from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m., follow the fast-moving shuttles, hear the click of knitting needles, and see the precision involved in decorative needle-arts.
Guest demonstrators will show how intricate bobbin lace is made and will create tatting (a series of knots that results in lace) with a shuttle. Quilting on a frame, crocheting, hair work and embroidery will also be demonstrated. Visitors may even test their needlework skills on a quilt square and take home a pattern for creating their own afghan blanket.
Reservations are not needed to attend these free programs. Kline Creek Farm is an 1890s living-history farm owned and operated by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.
