For Immediate Release
March 13, 2009
Your plow has a misshapen edge, and you need some repairs on your corn planter. Where do you turn for help? If you’re a DuPage County farmer in the 1890s, you’d call for a blacksmith. Visit Kline Creek Farm in Winfield to learn about metalworking skills in a hands-on workshop. "Blacksmithing Class" takes place on March 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Participants will use hammer, anvil and forge as they learn the basics of blacksmithing. They’ll try the fundamental techniques of drawing out, upsetting, bending and twisting, and even work on a piece to take home. "Blacksmithing Class" costs $25 per person, and is open to those ages 18 and older. Participants must wear closed-toe leather shoes and long pants, preferably jeans. Advance reservations are required by calling 630-876-5900.
Blacksmithing was an important skill on a farm of the era. These craftsmen did all kinds of work, from repair of existing equipment to custom creation of tools and household items. Visitors to the farm can see a blacksmith demonstrating the trade on most Saturdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. These regular demonstrations are free and open to the public.
