As Valentine’s Day nears, make plans to discover some history of the holiday, and enjoy its present through two programs at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.
Learn about Victorian dating customs during “Courting in the 1890s” house tours Feb. 2 – 27 Thursdays through Mondays at Kline Creek Farm, the District’s living-history museum. Discover the sometimes strict, sometimes permissive etiquette rules governing young couples. Find out who exchanged valentines, and hear readings of love letters. These free tours begin on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and registration is not required. For information, call Kline Creek Farm at 630-876-5900.
Start a Valentine’s Day tradition of enjoying the outdoors with your sweetheart. Take an evening stroll along lantern-lit paths and bridges during “Romantic Night Hike” on Feb. 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center. A cozy fire and hot chocolate will warm couples at the end of the trail. The event is for adults only and costs $10 per couple. Registration is required by calling Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center at 630-850-8110.
