Preserve History
The 115-acre Egermann Woods Forest Preserve contains one of the few remaining pre-settlement oak forests left in DuPage County. This preserve provides an excellent habitat for a variety of native animals including squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks, deer, owls and others.
The site was purchased by the Forest Preserve District in 1974 for $1.2 million from Hazdra Homes, Inc., a development company which had sought to build single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums on the site. Lisle Township contributed $200,000 for the acquisition.
The preserve is named for the Egermann family, former owners of the land. By purchasing the land, the District was able to save this important tract of woods.
At the time of the purchase, the land was wooded, with some farming on the westernmost 15 acres. Those acres were later reforested with native trees and plants to restore the preserve to a more natural condition. Today, Egermann Woods gives visitors a glimpse of what this part of DuPage County looked like when the pioneers arrived in the early 1830s.
