Land Preservation

Preserving Land
In 1915, visionaries worked to establish the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. The early years saw the beginning of what would become a renowned regional open space system. Within the last few decades, our efforts have focused on keeping pace with a great and growing DuPage County community. We strive to continue providing this level of open space opportunity to our citizens.

The Forest Preserve District's efforts are focused on preserving land that protects natural areas for wildlife habitat; preserves wetlands, prairies and forests; provides trails, greenways and connections between preserves; protects against flooding, and expands and creates new preserves. Open space and natural lands help foster the quality of life enjoyed in DuPage County.
Conservation Easements
A Conservation Easement is a way to protect the natural resource value of your land while you continue to own it. It is a legal method to protect and sustain conservation values by limiting use of the land. To date, we have worked with property owners and protected hundreds of acres with Conservation Easements.
