DuPage Forest Preserves: Beauty Abounds

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is doing its part to preserve natural areas. And with the preservation of open space and conservation of natural resources, comes the beauty of natural areas. But it's more than aesthetics.

Natural areas preserve habitat for all things wild. From the monarch butterfly to the purple milkweed, all species - some threatened, and some yet endangered - require natural areas to thrive. Many species are success stories, and others are making a comeback thanks in part to forest preserves.

Even more, natural areas provide corridors for wildlife and create passageways that allow animals to transport and disperse native seeds. Natural areas create buffers between developed properties and open tracts where sensitive flora blooms plentiful.

Natural areas benefit the county's human residents, too. By filtering pollutants, wetlands recharge and purify groundwater. These communities also soak up water during storm events to provide flood control. Woodlands provide climate control through transpiration and shade. And communities rich with native plants provide clean oxygen to breathe.

DuPage forest preserves contribute to quality-of-life in DuPage County. That's a beautiful thing.
